The individuals who make money while shorting are shoveling profits from the buyers while price goes down. If price action has begun to reverse, the majority of the buyers at top may be sitting on their losing trades while in the red (they bought at higher prices- creating equity for shorters), while there may also be a minority buying dips at higher prices and also holding as prices goes down on them as well. Both groups have suppplied the profits to the shorts.

Group A) those who bought the top and hold B) Those who buy lower highs (dips) while prices goes down.
Kind of like a person selling a house on the market for 300k when the market is hot. That same house wont sell for 300k when the housing market dries up, but the person that sold at 300k has equity while everyone else who sells later has less equity - or maybe they never sell at all.. they are taking a loss on their return, until the buyers for houses come back in.

There is your connection. In the event there are majority of sellers and a minority of buyers the faster the downsing is and the profits that are accumulated depends on where the individuals began their short. These short position would grow faster as a result of the majority of sellers.
