The scammers ruin everything.

Once when I worked for eBay for a short time, they told me the story of how eBay started: When the founder listed his broken laser light for "sale" on his website, someone paid for it. There was implicit trust from both sides. People started selling and buying over the internet, most of them without any cheating. There were no mechanisms in place in those early days to ensure either party kept up their side of the deal. But still the honest buying and seling were enough in volume to offset the loss from rare fakers. The company was built on this notion that "basically people are good".

There is a reason eBay didn't work in India. And later, not just India, when the internet matured beyond early users, scammers became more mainstream everywhere. Then eBay went on a nosedive it never recovered from mostly owing to buyer/seller disputes they can't resolve at scale. They blame Amazon for this downfall, but Amazon was never built on "basically people are good".

Not just seller fraud, buyer fraud too, Multiple Amazon & Flipkart sellers I know now have also told me similar things about buyers from north states. Nearly all the fraudulent returns come from northern states. Even the return pickup agents work differently in the south compared to north. Here they check the item before picking up, there somehow it is not clear what happens, the sellers have to deal with some garbage in the return box and then have to fight tooth and nail with the platform to hear their appeal. Platform doesn't care after a point because they get hit with the loss if they accept the buyer's fraud. So after one or two times, they will simply reject the claim.
