Haryana and Punjab are neighbors, but Haryana feels way more patriarchal and socially backward. Why is that? From personal observation, all my Haryanvi friends were pressured into marrying by the age of 25-26, while many of my Punjabi friends remain single and thriving in their careers well into their 30s. Punjabi parents also seem to have a more easygoing and relaxed attitude toward these life choices. They don't treat their bahus like naukraanis, and their daughters like a burden.
