  3. Ever wondered why you trust banks with your money?šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

While no perfect formula exists to determine the right insurance amount, these approaches give us different lenses for examination, contingent on risk tolerance, fiscal space, and depositor behavior.

The current conversation focuses on vertical expansion (raising the limit per depositor). But the debate could shift horizontally, considering insurable institutions and new financial products like digital wallets and fintech offerings.

Why not insure all deposits? Countries like Uzbekistan do so. But this would put a massive burden on DICGC—using public funds to cover private bankers’ errors. And this isn’t the only concern.

Economists often talk about’moral hazard’. If depositors knew their money was fully safe, they might ignore banks’ risky behaviors, which can result in irresponsible banking. So, finding a balance is crucial.

The RBI Deputy Governor suggests tailored coverage for demographics like senior citizens rather than a blanket increase, aiming to primarily shield those most vulnerable.

Deposit insurance isn’t free. Banks pay premiums on deposits, which can indirectly affect customers via slightly lower interest or higher fees. In India, the once ₹0.05 per ₹100 deposit insurance premium had climbed to ₹0.12 by 2020.

Most countries, including India, utilize a flat premium for deposit insurance. This means all banks pay the same rate. However, this results in well-run banks subsidizing poorly run ones. It’s no surprise that many argue for moving to a risk-based premium system.

While commercial banks in India pay a majority of the premiums, most payout events arise from co-operative banks. This unequal distribution underscores the need for a risk-based premium system where riskier banks bear larger costs.

Walking the deposit insurance tightrope involves maintaining a balance. Too little coverage could trigger panic and instability; too much, and we risk causing moral hazards, enabling weak banks to thrive and draining public resources. One must keep searching for the ideal balance.

The perfect deposit insurance limit? No consensus. Options range from increasing coverage, indexing it to inflation, or customizing for vulnerable groups. The goal remains: build depositor confidence but encourage prudent banking.

In a world racing on info & misinformation, deposit insurance is a sturdy anchor. Reassuring that there’s a safety net for deposits, preventing all-out bank runs. Yet, we must fine-tune this system and keep sight of the balance. Blind trust can be as disruptive as no trust.

BJP is not suicidal like congress(who divided atate which was their bastion). Andhra e kadu bjp has bigger stakes in Karnataka and telangana .

BJP is single largest party in south India. They will increase seats in almost the same ratio.
