Regarding language, you can learn some basic words from youtube videos or just use English words. You'll only need it for auto / cab drivers, PGs, restaurants etc.

Try to hang around your team during lunch etc. and if you have tamil teammates, just ask them how to say specific things in tamil. If there is one thing tamil people like, it's teaching our language to enthusiastic learners. Don't feel embarrassed to speak out your broken tamil with confidence, it may sound funny and you may get a few laughs (all in good jest) but that is how you learn a language.
