Civilization is a imaginary construct. It's nothing to do with spiritualism or materialism. Civilization aren't the ultimate end to human progress, even civilizations with most advanced technology or spiritualistic advancedments vanish into oblivion. For example - Egypt, Indus valley etc.

So it's a futile debate, have what you like and is sustainable.

West has been able to fight poverty, disease, hunger, malnutrition etc due to its materialistic achievements. Indian subcontinent was a cradle of spiritualism but couldn't overcome any of it.

Spirituality is important but so is materialism. There is nothing wrong in anything, at a microscopic level it's about the individual preference. That's all.
