I agree with you OP. I don't think the rituals are no longer needed. However, if they are doing it to themselves let them, we can't change these things. I've tried to reason with many people but it doesn't change. But I heavily condone bringing up the kids.

I have seen a similiar behaviour when we were hiking Vellingiri. Being an adult I or my friends couldn't hike the 7 hills, but I saw many dads bringing their kids, around 7-8 yo and letting them hike. I don't see the appeal to it. While hiking down I saw a kid by the same age, he got his knees hurt by falling down, not a major wound but he was bleeding a bit and crying, since the poor soul couldn't handle it. There were 2 more hills left to reach the bottom. And I hear a dimwit say "sami pathutu vanthuta la, sami pathupanga", I don't have anything against religion or god but why do this to a small kid who cannot process such things? The kid couldn't stop crying until his dad came back with a water can and something to eat.
