As a Gen Z'r who is one of the hardest working and most productive members of the company I work for, I think you're way off the mark. I took my current job because there's a lot of good learning opportunities and I get compensated well.


I'm responding in good faith, please remember that. I honestly think that your expectations aren't aligned with reality. Hard-working and competent people don't work for free. If you're not paying well enough, you're not going to get a good candidate. For no other reason than they'll simply be able to get a better offer.

Now as a startup you can offer some non-monetary benefits that can help attract high performers. If you can offer something really intellectually stimulating for the employee to do, they may take a lower salary. To be honest, it doesn't sound like you're offering the kind of experience that meets that description.

Lastly, you're wrong that making your job application process harder will attract better candidates. Ironically, the only people who are willing to jump through hoops are desperate people. In demand candidates call around their network to get a job.

I think you need to take a more honest assessment of what you really can offer a top performer.

Then let’s halt the money we send to the feds. No more red state welfare.

It's interesting how quickly federal aid can flow when there's a competent administration in place. The past few years have shown us just how crucial effective leadership is during crises. One can only hope that this level of responsiveness becomes the norm, rather than the exception.
