Truly the most disappointing flip of the whole season. He had huge potential, and he wasted it in just 2 weeks.

The shot above is of Bishops Padiyara and Kunnassery at Kottayam around the mid 20th century. I’ve never been particularly religious but I’ve always thought the vestments (ceremonial clothing) of the Malabar/Malankara Christian priests/bishops of Kerala were astounding to see.

Something interesting to note for my history fans. The Syrian Catholics (Syro Malabar Church) went through some what of an evolving identity during the time period of this photograph. After accepting Catholicism post-1663, the Syrian Catholics would be heavily Latinized (liturgically westernized) by the Portuguese and the following Catholic powers in Kerala. Nonetheless, the they still maintained semblances of their Syriac heritage.

By the 19th century, the Syro Malabar Church was almost entirely Latinized with their priests wearing Latin vestments and singing the Latin Mass translated to Syriac. The Syrian Catholics were also incorporated under the Latin Catholic Diocese of Verapoly. Pope Leo XII however decided to grant the Syrians their own bishops and diocese’ (religious territories) in 1887, thus leading to full autonomy and the formation of the modern Syro Malabar Church.

Since that point onward the church has faced somewhat of an internal struggle, with some factions wanting to maintain the age-old Latinizations and with others wanting the rampant restoration of their Syriac identity. The posted image above is a great example of this. The bishops are wearing Syriac vestments due to the fact that the church had gone through major Syriac reform in the mid-20th century. If this same shot had been taken just a few decades earlier however, these same bishops would have been dressed like the Syrian Catholics below, in full Latin Catholic vestments:
