For me, it was a logical conclusion I came to recently. Prior to this, I was a practicing Hindu just like my mother. My father is an atheist, but I always found it hard to understand his point of view, until I started reading on science more avidly, and that happened only recently. There is no reason to believe in God or to not believe in God. Firstly, if such a being cannot be empirically confirmed, it makes no logical sense. Similarly, its existence cannot be empirically disproved.

And what proves that our perception is true? Nothing

Dualism can be considered limitation of human cognition and language. We tend to perceive chairs as chairs, tables as tables, apples as apples, etc. But does that mean it is all true? This may sound irrational at first, but let me explain logically. A door slams back. Why did it slam back? Because of the wind. What caused the wind? And so on... This is a very superficial example. In fact, you could start with smaller steps. And what you would realise from thinking backwards like this is that you could regress in infinite ways starting from the fundamental question- Why did the door slam back?

From this, we can logically conclude that nothing has essence of its own. That everything is empty. Going by logic like this, you can regress forever and find nothing.

According to atheists, even God must have a cause in order to exist. However, theists think differently. They hold that God is an exception to nature.

The honest answer? We don't know.

But about religion? I definitely think it's a product of imagination and culture, just a way to keep people under check. Which I don't feel is a good thing.
