Dad was always an atheist who performed for his parents. Mom was religious but never the kind that imposed very strictly. Grew up going to church, Sunday school, retreats, etc., and started questioning around my late teens.

A few things in the news that time shook my core and I started vocalizing my feelings to a few friends. It was very easy after that to find clarity. I also believed at one point that if there was a ‘god’, he’d be a psychopathic sadistic jerk. I am now, an atheist.

Family knows and are fine with it. At first my relatives and grandparents used to taunt me. Any misfortune and they’d be like, it’s because you don’t pray. Fuck that. They’ve had enough of trying to “talk sense” into me.

I am at peace. I love the unlearning I did. I try to bring up my kid with an open mind where if they want to be religious they’re free to. I’d rather they go through their own journey into the same clarity I got, than force them into anything.

We have conversations at home now about what organized religion is, about this whole conditional love’ that ‘god’ has, and why fear is the root of all of this; and I think my kid slowly does see the light.

Instead of night time prayers, we do a gratitude session, just thanking everything around us. And mostly the universe.
