The original story as per the Shiva Puranam is that Brahma and Vishnu were fighting over who is greater so Shiva manifested himself to be a giant pillar of fire and challenged Vishnu to find the bottom and Brahma to find the top so as to stop their war. The point was that the pillar of fire was so eternal and magnificent that there was no beginning or end to it. Vishnu realized this and came back to the surface but Brahma realized this too and decided he’d lie. To do so, he brought back a flower that fell from the top and a cow that was traveling down to lie for him and act as a fake witness. Shiva gets angry and curses Brahma to not be worshipped anywhere on earth. Brahma asks for an exception and Shiva grants him one temple in Ajmer, Rajasthan. From then on Shiva has been worshipped in the Linga form on his own wanting. There’s more to the story but that’s the bit that’s relevant to this question.

The story about him being cursed comes in a different text known as the Venkatachala Mahatyam of the Skanda Puranam where Durvasa Maharishi travels to Brahmaloka, Vaikuntam and Kailasham to test who is the greatest deity and in who’s honor an extensive ritual should be carried out in. In Brahmaloka, Brahma and Saraswati are busy playing music and don’t pay attention to Durvasa. Durvasa gets mad and curses Brahma to not be worshipped anywhere on earth. However, from the other story, Shiva had made an exception that there would be one Vedic temple for him and that’s it. Today, there is only one temple for Brahma. From there, he goes to Kailasham where Shiva and Parvati are dancing together and don’t pay attention to his arrival. He gets mad again and curses Shiva to only be worshiped in the Linga form for a devotee to attain the full benefit of Shiva Sadhana. Again, there’s more to the story but this is the only relevant part for this question. Even today, there are temples that house actual Murtis of Shiva instead of a Linga but there are very few because Shiva himself decided to be worshipped in the Linga form.

I used to find it difficult- but not anymore. The point it more we delay the tough conversation, more difficult it becomes to discuss and ultimately lead to a strained relationship.
