Women Need To Realise That Beneficial Laws Aren't Means To Threaten, Domineer Or Extort From Their Husbands : Supreme Court

The Court observed that more often than not, provisions like Section 498A (cruelty), 376(rape), 377(unnatural sex), and 506(criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code are invoked as a *"combined package"* to pressurise the husband to accede to the demands of the wife in matrimonial cases. > *"The provisions in the criminal law are for the protection and empowerment of women but sometimes are used by certain women more for purposes that they are never meant for. In recent times, the invocation of Sections 498A, 376, 377, 506 of the...

Why Can’t India Act as Swiftly as France Did in the Gisèle Pelicot Case?

I recently read about the case of Gisèle Pelicot, where 51 men were convicted for a terrible crime, and I was shocked by how quickly the French government acted. The case lasted only three months, and by December 2024, the court had convicted all 51 men. The main man behind the crime, Dominique Pelicot, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, while the others got sentences from 3 to 15 years. This made me think about the Nirbhaya case in India. Nirbhaya’s attackers were convicted in 2013, but it...

Got fined for “damaging” my passport because of a bank stamp—feeling frustrated!

I recently booked an appointment to renew my passport since it’s expiring next year. For context, I’m on a student VISA. When I first traveled to the U.S., I exchanged $400 through SBI, and they stamped my passport to indicate the forex transaction. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. Fast forward to today: when I went to reissue my passport, I was charged an additional fine of ₹1500 for “damaging” my passport because of the stamp. I tried explaining to them that I wasn’t aware this...

I visited villages of India and this is the situation

I have been serving in Sagroli Village of Maharashtra for sometime now. Today, I had a chance to visit the houses of the Orphaned, Single Parented and Under Privileged Students in the neighbouring villages who live in our hostels. It was an extremely humbling and eye-opening experience. I also found out that there are hundreds of more students living like this, unable to study and need our help. This is what we need to contribute to when we have the privilege living under a cemented roof. The real India...
