How does Gujarat manage to stay conservative/traditional despite progress and urbanization? Genuine question from a non Gujarati.

I have always wondered how Gujarat remained conservative/traditional. It has always been an anomaly for me(in a good way). I believe civilizations are cyclical in nature. Bad times -> progress & good times -> indulgence & decadence -> bad times. From what I observed progress and urbanization has almost always lead to decline of conservative/traditional values. But I don't think thats the case with Gujarat (another possible exception could be Kerala). I can understand for Rajasthan (no offense meant..I actually like it, its in to-do list of places to...
