    Because that sadness would be too much to handle. Our brain uses different techniques to protect itself. You might have suppressed your emotions at that time to not feel anything. It's not that you can't be sad. It's just that death and grief are difficult to handle. So, you suppressed whatever you were feeling at that time.

    Don't hate your feelings. Emotions are not black and white that when you are sad, you start crying or when you are happy, you start smiling. It's much more than that. Many times, people cry when they are happy or angry. You not crying at your loved one's death doesn't mean that you were not sad that they died.     I would suggest seeing a counsellor once to go in depth about this.
