I'm a chronic late-sleeper and late riser here. But I wake up even before the alarm goes off on days when I have something important and time sensitive to do like catch a flight, get on a call with someone abroad, go on a long drive etc. So to me it looks like having a solid purpose is all it takes to keep you alert. Also, if you consistently sleep early for a week, it becomes easier to wake up early. I experienced this too.

Despite all this knowledge, I keep going back to square one as my work requires me to work late sometimes, and I fall back into the vicious circle.
