Have you ever done a site migration to retain SEO strength? Frankly if you’re not experienced doing one, I’d let the client know. Better to be honest in a situation like this. You can certainly let Google know your domain name has change by submitting a change of address, and make sure to map all URLs so they 301 redirect appropriately.

The reality here is that even if you do everything correctly you’re changing the domain name and it’s going to take something like a year, or possibly more depending on how well the migration is done, to recover indexing. It’ll be a net-zero site.

If the plan is to potentially revert back to the old domain you likely don’t want to touch backlinks and things like that, but that’ll hamper the performance of the new domain.

I would also tell your client he may have to get used to paying for traffic for a bit in order to get eyes and people to the new site.

If it were me, I’d first try to appeal the decision since the work could be a total sunk cost. If that’s not an option for your client, then I’d potentially think about simply moving on and working with the new domain name/business name instead. It totally sucks but that’s the reality here.
