Ironically the woman closest to leading a political front in Kerala right now is Shobha Surendran but of course she is from BJP. If and when they emerge as an electorally viable front, she could very well be their choice (Please don’t downvote me for saying this).

There is no other option at present. UDF only has one woman MLA which is Uma Thomas who is unfortunately now very unhealthy and even otherwise is not someone who would be given a leadership position. And anyway IUML will not accept a woman CM so it’s out of the question for UDF.

There was a little bit of momentum (and a lot of PR) for Shailaja Teacher but she was promptly sidelined - dropped from the cabinet and then promptly lost in Vatakara in (sorry to say this) embarrassing fashion. Now according to the 2 term MLA rule of CPM she may not even be given a ticket in 2026. Even if she is, she is quite far back in the hierarchy. Teacher is not a young woman, she will be almost 70 when the next election comes and Pinarayi will probably be the face again. After that when there is generational change, there is no prominent woman in the CPM middle order leadership to become CM anytime soon. It’s people like Veena George and U. Pratibha in the next generation and they are all handicapped by various factors. Funnily enough PP Divya was climbing the ranks but she is a no-go now.

So no woman CM in the immediate future. As I said above, if BJP ends up becoming a viable party in the next 10 years then from what we know about them they could very well project Shobha.
