The term "God" gives people a sense of hope. I don't have any extreme beliefs, so I won't consider labeling myself, but I believe people believe in God because it provides them with hope that they have someone above them in the hierarchy who will help them. It gives them the courage to think that if they fail, they have someone who'll make their life right. It also instills a sense of fear that if they do something bad, they'll get punished. Overall, I guess people who believe in God, somewhere, run away from accountability.
