The way I was raised, I was always told that religion isn’t a zero-sum game. You do the best you can, with what you have, and stay mindful of the circumstances. And as long as you’re sincere, it won’t matter much. The sincerity of the belief is what’s always important, and faith should never get in the way of being kind, and helping others. **Your religious belief and faith should never become a cudgel you use to annoy, or otherwise harm, other people.**

It’s kind of like how there are observant Jewish people who observe a day of rest during sabbath (which is a Saturday for Jewish people). They have strict regulations on what they can and can’t do on sabbath day. But they also are explicitly not allowed to use those regulations as a reason to not do some crucial life saving work. Humanity is what is most important, everything else is just extra.

Like, I’m of the belief that if a cow has a terminal illness, and is suffering and in pain and will be that way until they die, then the kindest thing, that is most in line with dharma, would be to euthanize them. Because if that is the only thing that can prevent unnecessary suffering, then it is the right thing to do in the circumstances. Allowing a cow to suffer, bc you’re more worried about your own religious practices and karma, is selfish and a bigger sin than anything else. And that is a realization I had when I was still fairly religious, so it’s not motivated by my atheism. This is religion as it was taught to me, by the people around me.
