Salaried income is only for plebs like you and me. The rich are getting richer from capital gains, asset appreciation.

Here’s a fun fact: Jeff Bezos only got paid $80k in income combined over 23 years when he was the CEO of Amazon. He got paid 0 income most of those years. So he paid less income taxes than his secretary. All his wealth is from appreciation of Amazon stock he owns. Mark Zuckerberg literally gets paid $1 per year in income. Your high income taxes wouldn’t matter at all for these people. Same case in India. Even people who don’t work at all but inherit land from ancestors make crores in profit but pay minimal taxes.

So high income taxes only traps people in middle class/lower middle class by removing upward mobility. It is also a primary reason why rich seem to get richer while rest stay where they are. That’s because the rich are getting exponentially rich from asset appreciation and capital gains which is taxed at a much lower rate than income.

So income taxes need to be reduced, GST needs to be reduced. Higher capital gains is ok, the recent changes to capital gains are welcome. Capital gains tax was artificially too low in India. Most countries have 15% LTCG and 30% STCG. We should drastically lower GST. Max tax bracket should be 12%

We also need major reform to capture gains in real estate accurately. Right now people who invested in real estate, inherited lots of land are making crores in capital gains and paying almost no taxes on it.
