I can just about read Malayalam, I left Kerala in 1991 aged 7. I went to Loyola school which had a fine if you spoke Malayalam instead of English.
I still struggle with joined up letters (kuttuasksharam). My daughters and sister who were born outside of India have struggled to speak Malayalam because of the tonal changes we have in our language.
Malayalam and Tamil are the hardest languages in Asia and arguably in the world, so I’d say don’t hate on people who grew up outside of Kerala.
