In your budget, you'll only get something (and that also with a roommate) in an old building in East parel or adjoining areas like Dadar, Mahim, Mahalaxmi etc. East Mumbai is generally more affordable than the west so start looking there first. Stay as close to your work place as possible and thank yourself later. Practically every road in Mumbai is dug along with Metro work so traveling is a nightmare esp in the rains. Good luck.

PS: Do check out Wadala. It's not very far but will def be more affordable than the above.

Edit: Other things to keep in mind are that dont fall for brokers tactics. Take your time and see as many options as possible and dont get pressured into something. Brokers use scare tactics esp with out-of-towners. Negotiate with the landlord directly if you want a better deal. Have 2 options in hand so you are in the position of strength while negotiating. It's in the brokers interest that you pay as high a rent as possible. Brokers are a notorious, predatory lot, its hard to find one who doesnt mislead, scare and manipulate you. Make sure to make an legal agreement and go through it thoroughly so you know what you're getting into. Many a times there may be predatory clauses that says a tenant has to repaint the house when they vacate. Refuse such shit downright. Look confident, look like you have done this many times before.
