It is still rampant, and some people do openly demand it. A friend of mine recently got engaged and while talking to them; they mentioned the grooms family demanding more that the agreed upon dowry(north of a 7 digit figure), on top of that the groom (very well educated) demanded a luxury car. I cant image the quality of life they’re going to be leading :/ i would personally lose respect for a person who demands such gifts, let alone marry them.
