Pathanamthitta is the main place for various christian factions and the notable majority of them are the Malankara Marthoma and Malankara Orthodox factions. Both these groups are well off and have a highly educated workforce. In the 1970s and 1980s, some marthomakar and Orthodoxkar migrated to gulf while some of them moved to the US and settled in the New York and Philadelphia area( you can see a huge number of Marthoma and Malankara Orthodox Parishes in the New York-New Jersey Philadelphia belt). You can also see many churches of both factions in gulf also like in Kuwait.

After the 2000s, migration to North America decreased and migration towards EU and UK began. The gulf migration trend still continued till the early 2010s. After a while the gulf migration slowed down and many of the achayans who made big money in the gulf decided to retire back in Pathanamthitta. The youngsters on the other hand continue to migrate abroad and with the recent trend it's towards Europe, Australia, Nz and Canada especially through study abroad programmes where they settle in those places eventually.

The current pace of migration is continuing. Is it a culture, yes it is as they have been migrating from kerala since the 1960s. Some of them settled in different parts of India particularly in the north and Central parts like Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and also in places like Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The typical Pathanamthitta achayan is a guy who migrates and settles in a new place, makes money...and then maybe comes back to his own place or maybe not(depends if gulf they will comeback but if it's the west, they would eventually settle there).

Kottayam achayans especially Knanaya catholics migrated to the US during the 60s. They have a good presence in the Chicago Illinois area. Even the Syrian Catholics from Kottayam too have migrated in those times and settled mostly in Chicago.

Christians who all migrated at those times were migrating as students, health care professionals(women who especially studied nursing), engineers. Chain migration followed as well by those families who brought their families in kerala to the US especially through Family sponsoring.

I have stated the US particularly since the above mentioned factions like Marthoma and Orthodox have more than 60 plus Parishes and congregations in the United States. The syro malabar catholic church( including Knanaya) too have more than 60 plus Parishes in the United States. And if we look at the demographics, majority of the immigrant faithful for these churches come from Pathanamthitta particularly Thiruvalla belt(for Marthoma and Orthodox) and Kottayam particularly Pala, Changanassery, Uzhavoor, Kaduthuruthy( Syro-Malabar and Knanaya Catholics)
