It depends on your speed and traffic conditions. 40 meters distance is around 10 cars. If you're travelling in peak traffic the distance may not be even one car but at 100 kmph, 20-30 meters is comfortable. In city however, the speed limit is generally 50-60 kmph. In that case, driving at 40-45 irrespective of the distance between cars is logical. Don't pay heed to the honking bonkers.
