I guess to feel a sense of community and belonging in a place so alien to you. I guess it helps people settle in easier and if you want help, communities come together. People also feel good when they have more people to celebrate any festival etc and keeping the culture alive tho I'd say some people lose all civic sense abroad when it comes to celebrations...also it's good to have a community backing to protect yourself from racist localites.
