Ask politely if its possible to get a basic salary - for accommodation, commute and daily living expense nothing more. If he is a self built and reasonable man, he will understand and respect that. He might offer an alternate in terms of a place for accommodation and a minimum wage, which is a win win.

If he refuses (low chances), you will know he is not the ideal man you should look upto, but can decide to bear the cost yourself if you are that eager to learn.
Ultimately, You have to try your options and if nothing work, you have to just bear the expenses if the learning matters that much to you.

You will anyways start earning basic at-least soon if you are that eager to learn
