I’m a professor where faculty don’t retire if they don’t want to do so. We have profs in their 80s including profs who’ve already retired at other universities and are pulling a full pension while getting a full salary at our program. Part of me likes having very senior and respected scholars around. After all, their work is the research I read that led me to this career. But that’s not the issue. I’m just done with their constant naysaying, their incessant shallow politics, their need for factions and cliques, their narcissism, their cynicism, their constant need to be patted on the back, their constant raising of a bar that they never had to reach, their nepotism, etc., etc., etc. Makes me really understand Dylan Thomas’ poem, Do Not Go Gently into that Goodnight. Stop raging and fucking retire.
