No it doesn't work like that. By being prosperous, the country also builds economic ties with other nations which tame the aggressive tendencies. China and US haven't gone to war with each other, nor has Saudi with anyone. They can't risk billions they make in trade. When countries are economically tied in the global economy, the losses from a war outweigh any potential gain.

US and Russia don't trade much, hence they're so eager to go against each other indirectly. Their arms industry benefits from wars on foreign countries. If they were economic partners, the calculus would be totally different.

That's the broad idea. If our neighborhood is prosperous and is economically tied to us, then hurting us is their loss too.
