I live in the western suburbs of Melbourne which has seen a huge uptick in new Indian immigrants in the past 5 years due to affordable housing compared to the older eastern suburbs. By my anecdotal observation, the primary reason for the anti-Indian sentiment really boils down to a few large points:


1. There is a noticeable lack of hygiene or body odor from newer Indians that is extremely apparent in certain places such as public transport.


2. Lack of respect to waiting in lines or waiting for turns and general disrespect to established social norms. This is more of a subcontinent issue rather than an Indian specific issue but Indians are specifically called out for this behavior because of their numbers here.


3. Casual attitudes towards breaking laws really pisses of local populations. A good example of this I have observed to myself multiple times to give this point context are Indian housewives who obtain drivers licenses using questionable methods with Indian driving instructors and creating a general increase is road accident instances. This point is very very apparent in suburbs like Tarneit and Point Cook where a substantial majority of accidents where insurers deem the party at fault to be Indian women.


4. Indians in general are willing to work for significantly less wages than local populations and have been accused of being responsible for wage stagnation. While I think there is some truth to this, I do not think they are the sole reason for wage stagnation.


5. A lot of Indian “students” never really study here but rather take entry level jobs for years on end with limited command of English, the local language. This has created a sense within Australia that Indians have occupied the entry level market that is intended for young professionals or young people trying to develop experience.


Couple all of the above with a cost of living crisis and similar situations in the UK, US and Canada and you can see why local populations develop an anti Indian sentiment. Not saying it’s justified but to a certain extent, I can understand the sentiment.
