I think taking part in anything festive is more like a status symbol now. There is a lot of peer pressure (among youth and housewives) and FOMO about 'being part' of the festivities. For youth and families who wants to 'blend in' it is no longer a choice.

One method which has worked for me is that I don't avoid looking at them. When they approach me and ask for money, I just smile and say "ivatt illa akka, aagle obbrige kottidini. Next time🙂" (not today sister, I've already given money. Next time). They keep insisting for a while and then they leave me and walk away.
