As an Konkani Marathi, I have same POV what your friend have. In Konkan also, Konkani doesn't want to work anymore. I'd observed many non-konkani (Maharashtraians) worked in government backed projects like road construction, etc.

Some Maharshtrians might get offend, but we have to judge anyone based on merits not on ethnicity or religion.

Not just Assam, or even parts of the greater state, but the entire country would benefit greatly by using ONE neutral language (imho any form, dialect or accent of English). Divide and rule is one of the biggest issues currently plaguing India today, and our political rulers directly benefit from it. It has now culminated into a deep sense of insecurity and identity crisis by repeatedly chanting "nationalism", instead of "patriotism".

While recognising our heritage and tradition is extremely important, we must be progressive by preserving our past through a neutral language only, in our planning for the future.

Finally, many words and phrases in English are borrowed from the Saxons, Latin, Norwegian, French, etc. Similarly, many words and phrases in Assamese are borrowed from tribal Creole, Bengali, English Urdu, etc. This issue can be nipped by active education programmes and declarations by the government, but that would mean losing votes and concentrating on things that matter. No political party is currently pursuing this act of levelling the playing field afaik.
