China opened up its economy in 1978 & since then, its GDP growth rate averaged 8.93% from 1979-2023. Why was India so oblivious to the fact that china was growing so rapidly & only opened up the market when IMF forced them, as a condition to granting them a loan?
It’s not a commie ideology-there are always 2 options, one strengthen local manufacturers and second, open up the economy to the world. When India got freedom in 1947, it was poor, then between that to 1978-we had draught, Cold War, partition, war with Pak, riots and emergency and one oil crisis. For a nation that poor and struck by so many other conflicts we needed basic stuff first which also means local manufacturing and some industrial capacity. Our main source of gdp was agriculture and it was unreliable. Could they have done it earlier yes, was it the right strategy for a long time, also yes.
People are always getting angry why this didn’t happen earlier that government didn’t do that in 1960,1970-thing is, please ask your grandparents how India was 1960s, basics were not in place no one had any money. It took time to get basics in place. Also understand China has rich neighbours we don’t which makes it easier to export stuff. We are largely land locked. -

Bengaluru Pubs Shut Down: As over 40 pubs down shutters in Bengaluru, owners flag high costs & falling footfall | Bengaluru News - The Times of India
Pubs in west, offer affordable food (not snacks) and beer. Like 1.5lt of beer, with a good dish will cost around 10$ to 15$. That's less than cost of a good dine out. And 20$ if you want food with really good fresh beer. Another reason, is non availability of safe transport back to home. Cab and auto drivers behave like hooligans in the night time. So we prefer to stay at home and drink.
Government is also to blame, because they charge heft license fees from pub owners. -

Bengaluru Pubs Shut Down: As over 40 pubs down shutters in Bengaluru, owners flag high costs & falling footfall | Bengaluru News - The Times of India
I don't think price was ever an issue. People will drink and there's plenty of choice to hop around
Most pubs got fooled by the boom in people going out after being locked up in their homes and wfh. Now that distraction is over and its back to the daily grind to office and traffic, most people would prefer chilling at home with their friends. Its all about balance. Bring back WFH -

How to explore the city without spending much on transportation cost.
I was here solo for 3 days.
1. Go to churchgate using local and explore on foot. Puchte puchte you'll reach.
2. Go to elephanta caves
3. Don't eat anything at expensive restaurants. Instead, find some local spots and enjoy your dinner there.
4. Visit the kaala ghoda festival (pretty popular around here)
5. Watch a Play at Prithvi Theatre -

Bengaluru Pubs Shut Down: As over 40 pubs down shutters in Bengaluru, owners flag high costs & falling footfall | Bengaluru News - The Times of India
My observations
Restaurant closing is nothing new. But 2000 pubs in Bluru seems too high anyways. And why do they need govt funding for pubs?
Exorbitant prices for both food and alcohol plus mandatory services charges which you have to fight each time was definitely gonna hit them back one day.
One peg is sold at 400 to 500rs while the whole bottle at retail is around 3000k (25pegs x 400 = 10k btw ) . So just for the ambience which you will eventually get bored off, you don't need to spend 3x the prices of everything. And every food item is 300rs and above only.
My verdict is that pubs are overrated and responsible for their own demise and can't blame govt, taxes and customers for closing.
and 40 out of 2000 pubs closing doesn't seem like a big deal at all. That's normal for any business.
