Why were traditional houses in Uttarakhand and Himachal region made of stone and deodar wood, while in the rest of India, mud was mostly used?
Rocks/Paathar and Deodar timber for construction because:
— locally abundant(therefore cost-effective), — excellent insulators(for harsh cold & chilling winds) — durable & minimal maintenance, — compliments the rugged terrain.
Mud houses serve a different purpose in temperate & hotter environments, as they tend to remain cool during summertime.
