Reliance Retail has since 2013 rapidly increased it's footprint in multiple parts of Kerala and are buying up local supermarket chains. Aditya Birla (now Amazon's) More supermarkets have done the same. So far Lulu's expansion has been limited to wealthier, larger cities and towns and only in affluent areas, whereas the former two have priced out local stores in small towns too, and for much longer (since the late 2000s)

Therefore in essence the same effect will happen if Lulu decides to expand it's footprint into the local markets rather than the premium mall segment, so far they don't seem to be doing that, and so while I'm sure some stores will be affected, your average household would still prefer to do daily shopping from the smaller store nearby rather than a massive one half an hour away, it's two different market demands.

Apart from the growth of Reliance and more, there's also the rise of ecommerce groceries which if they manage to penetrate Kerala would be an even bigger threat to local stores that have to now compete on online storefronts with each other, while the consumer just has to click and place an order
