I got such call too - illegal stuff caught on airport. Almost 6 months ago and got rid of it because of my stubborn nature and habit to not talk on call for more than 1 min.

Psychology: Scam stories do sound funny, ridiculous, and dumb once occurred, until it happens to you or someone you closely related to.

It's goes with everything: crime, rapes, cheating, assault, discrimination, every possible negative things.

So yeah, do ask questions, but honestly in a questionable format. He may not be victim or maybe, but as long as you don’t understand, it’s good to stay ethical while you do so.

Apart from the obvious cheap marketing tactics other thing that can be true is that he may indeed be involved in some illegal shit and when the scammers called he thought that he got caught.
