I think it is the journalistic way to try to make sense out of things and report them, but you can't make sense out of senselessness. Both liberal and conservative media outlets did him a huge favor by pretending that everything is normal. When Trump is clearly lying, that gets translated as, "Trump claimed, without offering evidence."

Take the latest claim about $50M in condoms for HAMAS. The most obvious, simplest explanation is that they are lying their asses off. But then here comes Al Jazeera to say, oh maybe they were talking about Africa, which is nothing more than a guess on their part. Clearly the $50M worth of condoms claim is obviously not accurate as applied to federal aid programs in Gaza OR in Mozambique. That line item is pure fiction.
