Some tips that can be of help to you on the top of my head

Find a place close to your workplace if you don’t have a vehicle. Even if you have still find a place close by.

Address people as Anna and Akka ( respectful way of saying brother, sister) when dealing with local people

Download Ola/ Rapido for booking autos or bike taxis as the auto guys will fleece you if you go directly to them

People can have strong sentiments wrt to politics and movies , so be careful what you say.

City is generally safe but still be careful at night as streets can get deserted post 10-11pm. Police patrol around midnight as a security measure so be careful of not being found on the streets as they may question you.

Avoid drinking the local corporation water. Stick to bottled jar water like Bisleri or get a good aqua guard in place

Try to learn basic phrases in Tamil, it will help people be more appreciative of you

A lot of the city activity happens around the beaches : Marina, Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur. Gets very crowded on the weekends. You have beaches all along the coastal road called ECR which are great for drives as well as for relaxation at the beach. Avoid the beaches during late night hours as it can get unsafe

People are of conservative nature but are decent and helpful if you approach them respectfully.

Food scene is mostly geared towards South Indian but the city is opening up to more cuisines. Bonds are forged over a bucket of biryani

Gets really hot in the summers so if you can , get an ac(would consider it an essential)

This is a temple city so if you are religious you can visit a lot of temples here including the famous kapaleeswarar temple

If you want alcohol there is only one place called TASMAC which has outlets spread across the city. If you want a better looking setup go to the elite TASMAC which are in the malls like express avenue , Phoenix market city etc

This city experiences a lot of electricity fluctuations so get a voltage stabiliser for your white goods like fridge, tv, ac etc.

For home Internet ask the people in the building what is the most popular one rather than going for a certain brand as services may differ from one part of the city to another.

Don’t go for low lying areas or buildings with a lower floor- ground floor flats as the city has been getting almost every year one day of heavy rainfall that ends up flooding such kinds of homes. A building with higher floor and proper parking inside the building should be a want ( for reference watch this Tamil film called parking :)

Language can be difficult but thanks to apps (zomato, big basket etc) the need to communicate has been mostly eliminated but over time you yourself will learn to pick up the basic phrases and words. People here are proud of their language and culture so if you try to show efforts it will be appreciated
