He boldly writes to all European representatives in Surat, demanding substantial sums of money as a form of tribute. If they refuse, he threatens to return and destroy the city. He has made similar demands of the local inhabitants, who would likely comply if not for the Mogul’s officers preventing them, leaving everyone in a state of anxiety.
