Canadian here from the French speaking part of the country who is bilingual here. True story:

Years ago I was walking down the street of my home city where French and English are both spoken. I was immersed in some inner dialogue with myself. Out of the blue, a man at least 15-20 years older than me (accompanied by a woman I assumed was his wife) grabbed me by the shoulder and asked me — in English— if I spoke American. Shaken out of my reverie, and a little stunned, I replied — in English— “sorry I don’t speak American” and walked off. It took me about a block before I realised they were asking me if I spoke English. I still wonder what they made of my response.

Kindness and Honesty have become a rare commodity. If you get it, it's worth appreciating back so that they keep doing it and don't feel they are taken for granted.

The last I offered a seat to a mid aged woman (in her 50s I think), she took the seat as though it was her right and looked at me as if I was sitting in ladies seat all that time.
