It's possible to give up meth without external help but it depends from person to person and also on the degree of addiction.

You can talk to him, and convince him to give up meth. It's not easy to just give up a drug. It takes time and a lot of effort, for the mind to heal and get back to normal and even then there's a high chance of the person getting back into it.

I would suggest you get educated about drug addiction, specifically meth addiction. How to give up meth? How to manage the withdrawal symptoms. And also the person has to have a will to give up the drug, without that it's not possible.

It's really heart breaking to hear about this. I hope that he gets well soon and also you take care of yourself. The whole world is going through a drug epidemic and the most affected are the near and the dear ones after of course the person suffering from addiction.

I would try CMD+Option+R - there's a chance that the original OS has some problem, even though Catalina or Mojave (depending on from where you 2019MBP is) shouldn't have any problems. CMD+Option+R should load the most current compatible OS. Maybe see if that makes a difference.

The "?" icon is just your Mac telling you it can't find any working OS to boot from, which is to be expected when you erased the drive but didn't install a new OS.

Antivirus, as with windows is just an optional thing really, both Mac and Windows security are enough for 90% of people. If your wife is entirely tech illiterate and going to go on a ton of weird website and click a ton of links then maybe, just maybe. But really Mac and windows are plenty secure enough for individuals use
