“How Do I Ask for a Salary Without Making It Super Awkward?”
Hey Reddit, I need some advice because I’m stuck in one of those “adulting is hard” situations. Here’s the deal: My dad’s friend has a super successful real estate business in Pune, and I’m really interested in working there. Real estate has always seemed like a field I’d love to explore, and I’m willing to put in the work to learn. The problem? I’d have to move to Pune, which obviously comes with living expenses. I can’t afford to live there without a salary, but I don’t know how to ask for one without sounding, well, awkward. The kicker? My dad’s friend is loaded. Meanwhile, we’re just a regular middle-class family. So, talking about money feels… weird. I’m also a complete newbie in real estate, so I feel like I’d be asking for a lot without having much to offer at the start (other than a lot of enthusiasm). Here are my options: 1. Get my dad to ask for me (but that feels like hiding behind him, which isn’t ideal). 2. Talk to his friend myself (and potentially embarrass myself to the point of no return). How do I bring this up without making it awkward or ruining any chances of actually working there? And for bonus points, any tips for someone starting fresh in real estate? TL;DR: I want to work at my dad’s millionaire friend’s real estate office in Pune, but I need a salary to cover living expenses. How do I politely ask about a salary without sounding weird, especially since I’m a total newbie? Help me, Reddit—you’re my only hope!4
