Depends on each person. Some people like to talk, some don't. Some people don't like awkward silences and try to fill them in with questions.

To answer your question about why people are so interested in other's personal lives, this is a communal country. Our culture is based in join families, large support groups and communities that help each other. Part of that culture means naturally wanting to know about the people you meet. Countries like UK are not like us. They have a different culture and mindset.
