Social media is a safe haven for trolls and racist. People who are well natured are not spending hours on social media, and are instead mingling with other people and broadening their horizons.

As someone who’s been in Canada for 1.5 years and grew up in the UAE prior to that, I can confidently tell you that most Westerners regard Indians quite well. Every interaction I’ve had with Canadians were nothing short of warm and friendly; they went as far as taking the time to understand the pronunciation of my long and complicated Bengali name, even after I insisted that I’m fine with anything. My point is, most westerners are generally very respectful.

Honestly, there isn’t much that Indians in India can do. Indians outside India, however, can start by respecting the local culture and customs, and not be brash and loud when in public. A lot of them are quite respectful, but there are a select few who aren’t, and given how loud they are, trolls usually highlight them as a representation of all Indians.

Back in march 2023, I had a similar incident in BTM. Every day at 7 pm after the office, I used to go to a chai stall to have tea, bun chaska and a cigarette.

One day, while I was smoking and drinking tea, a guy came and stood beside me. He was chubby, wearing formals with glasses taller then me, and was also having tea.

Suddenly, he asked me, "Do you work somewhere?"
I replied, "Yeah, at Lenovo."
Then, on his own, he said, "I work at Capgemini as a manager."
I said, "Okay."
He then asked, "Can we exchange numbers? In case there are any job openings, we can refer to each other."
even I thought maybe it will be helpful, so we exchanged numbers.


Then, maybe after a week, this guy suddenly called me out of nowhere and said he wanted to have a party. He mentioned that he was alone and would book a hotel room, inviting me to join. I said no, but he insisted. I refused again, saying I had other plans, and cut the call.

He called me again, and by then, I could tell from the way he was talking that he was gay. So, I blocked his number. But then, he called me from another number and asked, "Should I come to pick you up?"

I told him, "Okay, come to the same place."

I informed my roommate about the situation, and we both went there. I took a beer bottle in my hand and waited near the shop where I had first met him. When he arrived, I asked him, "Can my roommate join?"

He replied, "I booked the room for two."

At that moment, I directly asked him, "Are you gay?"

I told him politely, "I am not, okay? So don't call me again or try this with me. I'm telling you nicely." Then I added, "And if you still don't understand, I'll break this bottle on your head right now to make you understand."

He said, ok and left.
