“On January 10, 2025, a disturbing incident occurred at our residential society in Sector 76, Noida. One of my flatmates was waiting for a cab outside the society gate around 10 PM when a bike suddenly appeared, and the rider snatched his phone before speeding away. It’s actually much more widespread than we think. I grew up very sheltered and I say that because until I went to college and met people from all over, I thought everyone agrees and is of the opinion that education is important and regardless of gender, everyone must be financially independent. College was a giant reality slap for me in that respect.

My own family that promotes education and independence etc has women as torch bearers of patriarchy rife with moral policing and shaming ppl for their bodies, skin color, fashion choices, time spent on the phone etc etc etc. I have had grandmas and their generation folk tell me and other girls in my family how we should be careful in not doing a lot of education cos then who will marry us? Don’t get me started on the religion and caste propaganda they spew out.
I used to brush it off as something from grandparents time and so maybe my parents, aunts and uncles won’t be like that coz they are city born n raised. Nope. Joke on me! They peddle the same bs if not more at times.

These ppl think progress means adapting with technology only to send ‘nam munoorgal ondrum muttal illai…’ themed boomer texts via WhatsApp. Where progress actually matters they will not change anything citing tradition and culture and how some British guy will come in their dreams and haunt them.

Best we can do is not let that get to us. When those teens come vent to you, know that you are viewed as a safe space for them and they trust you very much. You can chose to talk to the parents to call out their own bias or not depending on your own mental energy but main thing is helping these kids realize there are ways out there for them to seek their own path. If you do talk to the parents make sure to never let it out that their kids came to talk to you (I’m sure this is obvious to you xD) coz that’s setting them up for trouble.
