Bro if it's only pencil and crayon marks then instead of repainting try this - mix colin liquid, dishwasher liquid and colgate toothpaste in water and rub it on these marks. You thinking manual or automatic. Looks like you need the quadrants cut to bend and cover 90% of the stairwell. I’d recommend shaping foam for the rail. Hinges to allow opening and simple motors or hydraulic if you want it to open and close at the push of a bottom.

Keep in mind it has to be strong enough for an idiot to step on without falling through. Someone will be that dumb.

Well I can't add a photo of what I'm trying to explain i did a quick over picture sketch of a kaleidoscope style door.

The red are the panels, and the blue is the potential rail system so that the green can be pushed or pulled from the top of the stairs without having to bend down. 🤔 just a quick sketch but would be a fun project I would do it for 1100 but that's because of liability and extra care/time etc.
