I can’t believe they’re actually trying to block democrats (EDIT: INDEPENDENTS TOO, ANYONE) from being able to table a vote of no confidence. Calling for a vote of no confidence is a basic concept of parliamentary procedure. The speaker of the house is the speaker of the HOUSE, not the majority leader, and has to be accountable to everyone even if practically as long as they have the confidence of their own party it doesn’t matter.

And I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be thresholds, no single member should be able to call a motion as that can gum up the system. And I’m also not saying that there can’t be a time limit so that motions can’t be called every second. But for a speaker to say “fuck you, I’m not letting the minority call a motion at all even though it would be stupid to do so and easily voted down by my own party” is authoritarian straight up.

TLDR: Mike Johnson is trying to turn the Speaker of the House into the Majority leader. That’s not okay at all. Big authoritarian vibes. If we’re going to do that, we should just do what the British do, make the speaker non-partisan and act on the (procedurally allowed) advice of the majority leader. It wouldn’t be hard to do.
