They are not; it's a simplified map. We currently understand very little about the exact genealogy of Indian Languages to make such a map. I saw it on IndianHistory, and almost everyone was taking it at face value for some reason. Anyway, Indian languages are mostly in clusters, and the tree model doesn't fit very many of our languages. That said, the Insular (Sinhala and Divehi) are conjectured to be related to the Southern branch based on:

1. Some OIA verb forms and early vocabulary;
2. The existence of Divehi on the western side of the peninsula
3. Umlaut present in Helu Prakrit (Ancestral to Sinhala and Divehi).

According to me these are BS reasons, and I think it's much more likely that Helu is actually descended from an Eastern Prakrit. Maharashtri is also a typically later prakrit, both in terms of it's form and attested dates. If the Helu migrants did indeed sail to SL from the west, that itself would push back the dates of migration and settlement of North Deccan by a few centuries.

It's not an uncommon rule and chances are it's there in the school rules (check if you have a school diary or something). While it isn't the most convenient thing you are also agreeing to the rules of that institution when you are joining the said institution. If it really is an issue then you should look at other schools
