there are plenty of reasons at play, but I think a big advantage SRK had at that time was the lack of expectations from him.
He wasn't a mainstay in Hindi cinema at the time, hadn't established a solid presence yet so he wasn't pressured by any expectations from the average viewer. So they went in with no preconceived notion as to what an "SRK role" must entail, and walked out thoroughly entertained.

It's why, at least nowadays, some directors won't hire established stars for certain roles no matter how big they are, because the fan following they'd bring might not be receptive to the kind of role their fave is essaying.

A good example from personal experience is Juhi Chawla's role in Gulab Gang. I know someone, completely new to Bollywood, who loved her performance, but I had a hard time seeing her as anything but adorable and bubbly. That doesn't speak to her actual performance though, just an unfortunate/accidental bias developed over the years.
